ACAT accredited 2-day workshop in CAT Supervisor Training + follow-up reflective group meeting

Outline of the Workshop
Catalyse offered this intensive 2 day workshop open to CAT Practitioners or those towards the end of training, interested in CAT supervision and developing as a supervisor. The workshop was also a valuable opportunity for experienced CAT supervisors to look more intensively at their own practice as part of their own CPD. However, it was particularly designed for trainee CAT Supervisors or CAT Practitioners thinking of training in supervision to become an ACAT Accredited Supervisor. Attendance at this and a follow-up reflective session fulfils the Part 1 ACAT approved Supervisor Training and forms part of the formal ACAT training pathway.

What will the training include?
The training offered a chance to develop relational supervisory competencies. It drew on Debby Pickvance’s book ‘CAT supervision: a relational approach’ (Routledge, 2016) and  explored the relational approach to CAT supervision and challenges in the supervision relationship. It focussed on:

• key aspects of supervision
• building a supervisory alliance
• use of self
• parallel process
• working with process in the room
• supervision of development of CAT tools
• dynamics in supervision groups
• enactments and ruptures in supervision, and
• ethical issues

Methods included mapping relational patterns common in supervision, experiential exercises, small group reflection, trainer skills demonstrations, role play, mapping of personal supervisory style and presentations by the trainers on core ideas.

This course ran from 9.30am-5.00pm each day and concludes with a follow-up reflective group to build on the learning and internalisation of the relational supervision skills.

Who was the event for?

• CAT Practitioners or those nearing completion of practitioner training
• Experienced CAT Supervisors wishing to refine their skills and practice

We also aim to offer a separate one day workshop for people familiar with CAT but not trained as CAT Practitioners. This will include using CAT concepts and relational supervisory concepts but not aimed at supervising CAT as a therapy. Please contact us if you are interested in this.

Facilitators
Sarah Littlejohn originally trained as an integrative psychotherapist and qualified as a CAT Practitioner in 2001. Sarah went on to be accredited as a CAT Psychotherapist, and is also an accredited supervisor and trainer.  She’s been a lead trainer for the Catalyse Practitioner Training for more than a decade and provides supervision for Practitioner trainees and for IRRAPT trainees. Sarah runs introductory CAT workshops to a range of professionals each year. She has been a past chair of ACAT’s Training Committee and is currently a member of Catalyse Executive. She is particularly interested in how CAT provides a framework for the early formulation of complexity, and uses of the therapeutic relationship.

Glenys Parry has worked in the NHS for many years in clinical services, training, senior management and policymaking.  Glenys developed her skills in CAT after editing Tony Ryle’s 1990 book ‘Cognitive Analytic Therapy: Active Participation in Change’ for Wiley.  She has a longstanding interest in the effective application of research to practice and has led or contributed to a number of Department of Health policy initiatives in psychological therapies.   In addition to individual psychotherapy, she is an experienced organisational consultant and management mentor.
