Overview of workshop:

Reflective practice is a growing area in health, social care and third sector/charity services. CAT reflective practice, specifically, is widely offered by CAT practitioners and psychotherapists. It tends to draw on the general model alongside general reflective practice principles. However there have been few opportunities for CPD specifically in this area.

David and Kate’s workshop aims to fill this gap for CAT therapists. It provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the role of reflective practice facilitator, practise in a safe learning environment and develop your own development plan. There will be opportunity to reflect on common pitfalls, questions and anxieties.

For others less familiar with the CAT model who are providing reflective practice, this is an opportunity to consider yourselves as reflective practitioners, drawing on ideas from CAT. You can also consider how CAT ideas might complement your existing practice.

All attendees will receive an attendance certificate following the event, for your CPD records.

Aims and learning outcomes:

The workshop offers you structure, scaffolding, practical guidance and tips on facilitating reflective practice groups using a CAT perspective. There will be space to attend to early group tasks such as contracting. The day will also attend to how you can balance both content and process over the lifetime of the group. You can practice skills over the day. Additionally you can use experiential space to explore yourself and your own patterns as reflective practitioners, both individually, and in groups.

Who is it for?

This event is relevant for:

  • CAT practitioners and CAT psychotherapists
  • trainee CAT practitioners
  • other qualified therapists without CAT qualification who have completed a two day introduction to CAT, or self directed CPD in CAT, who want to supplement their existing practice with ideas from CAT model
  • CAT supervisors supporting their supervisees with their own application of reflective practice

Facilitators

Dr David Harvey is a consultant clinical psychologist and cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) practitioner, supervisor and trainer. He uses ideas from CAT and group analysis to develop and deliver reflective practice groups for staff teams working in inpatient, residential and outpatient settings. Over the years he has applied this approach to support all levels of system functioning from the front line up to senior management settings. David’s 2021 chapter in Reflective Practice in Forensic Settings: A Cognitive Analytic Approach to Developing Shared Thinking invited practitioners, managers and wider stakeholders to reflect on how forensic systems may “go astray”. He has championed ways in which CAT’s model of trauma assists such reflection.

In this training, he will share his experience of delivering reflective staff groups in services on a weekly basis. His approach is informed by group analytic ideas, adapted for a wider range of contexts, and with a focus on facilitator confidence, skills and tips.

Dr Kate Freshwater is a consultant clinical psychologist, cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) practitioner, supervisor and trainer. For 26 years, she served as the Trust Lead for CAT within TEWV NHS Trust, where she played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing CAT practice. She built a well-established and thriving CAT network, expanding this from a single practitioner to 56 skilled CAT clinicians. Kate has led, facilitated and supervised reflective practice across a wide range of services, including community, inpatient, and forensic settings. This work, across both frontline teams and senior leadership, helped to embed relational understanding and systemic thinking throughout the organisation.

She is also co-author, with Sue Walsh, of the chapter Struggling Well: Using CAT to Make Sense of Organisational Hurt” in the Oxford Handbook of Cognitive Analytic Therapy, contributing to the wider theoretical and applied development of CAT in complex organisational contexts.
