Overview of workshop:

Reflective practice is a growing area in health, social care and third sector/charity services. CAT reflective practice specifically is widely offered by CAT practitioners and psychotherapists, and tends to draw on the general model alongside general reflective practice principles. However there have been few opportunities for CPD specifically in this area.

This workshop will fill this gap for CAT therapists. It will be an opportunity for you to reflect on the role of reflective practice facilitator, practise in a safe learning environment and develop your own development plan. There will be opportunity to reflect on common pitfalls, questions and anxieties.

For others less familiar with the CAT model who are providing reflective practice, this will be an opportunity to consider yourselves as reflective practitioners drawing on ideas from CAT. There will also be opportunity to consider how CAT ideas might complement your existing practice.

All attendees will receive an attendance certificate following the event, for their CPD records.

Aims and learning outcomes:

The workshop will offer participants structure, scaffolding, practical guidance and tips on facilitating reflective practice groups using a CAT perspective. There will be space to attend to early group tasks such as  contracting, plus consideration of how to balance both content and process over the lifetime of the group. Participants will have a chance to practice skills over the day.  Additionally they will have the opportunity to use an experiential space to explore themselves and their own patterns as reflective practitioners, both individually, and in groups.

Who is it for?

This event is relevant for:

  • CAT practitioners and CAT psychotherapists
  • trainee CAT practitioners
  • other qualified therapists without CAT qualification who have completed a two day introduction to CAT, or self directed CPD in CAT, who want to supplement their existing practice with ideas from CAT model

Facilitators

Jenny Marshall is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and CAT Supervisor/Trainer. She worked in forensic services for many years where she developed her interest in applying CAT as an overarching model for Reflective Practice. Jenny has extensive experience in making use of this way of using CAT in her work with clinical teams, through to groups of senior managers and leaders reflecting on broader organisational dynamics. She co-edited the publication Reflective Practice in Forensic Settings: A Cognitive Analytic Approach to Developing Shared Thinking and, earlier this year, Innovative Practice in Forensic Settings: A Cognitive Analytic Approach to Effective Relational Work. Jenny currently splits her time between part time roles in the NHS, private practice, and CAT Practitioner and other types of training and faciliation for Catalyse.

David Harvey is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and CAT Supervisor/Trainer. He has used ideas from CAT and group analysis to develop and deliver reflective practice groups for staff teams working in inpatient, residential and outpatient settings. Over the years he has used these ideas to help all levels of system functioning from the front line up to senior management settings. His chapter in Reflective Practice in Forensic Settings: A Cognitive Analytic Approach to Developing Shared Thinking invited practitioners, managers and wider stakeholders to reflect on how forensic systems may “go astray”and ways in which CAT’s model of trauma may assist in such reflection. In this training, he will especially be sharing his experience of delivering reflective staff groups on a weekly basis in services informed by group analytic ideas and adapting this for a wider range of contexts with a focus on facilitator confidence, skills and tips.
